Video Tour of the Temple of Doom

January 28, 2009

I got an email request for some video of my game room.  I immediately thought, “Hell ya, man!”. Soon after that I completely lost interest. Then I was thinking about it a couple days later and just hours ago decided that it might be a pretty rad idea, so I used my New Media Communications degree to it’s fullest potential and whipped this little crap-cake up in 45 minutes. I know the lighting sucks, but you get the gist of it. Enjoy!

The song is “Memory of Lightwaves”, aka the title screen music to the hideously underrated masterpiece Final Fantasy X-2. Yeah, I am a huge nerd. Deal with it.

How to throw a Classic Game Party

January 20, 2009

I recently read AJ Glasser’s feature over at Kotaku.com wherein she breaks down how to throw a gamer party. That’s all fine and good if you like playing new games, but what about all the other games? What about the TurboGrafx and the Super Nintendos?

Luckily, I have you covered. Having just thrown a classic gaming party this past weekend (before the article was published, coincidentally) I felt I would share some tips on how to throw a gaming party that covers all the bases.

Review: Akumajō Special: Boku Dracula-kun (Kid Dracula)

January 16, 2009

It’s been a while since I have done a review, so I figured I’d focus on one of my favorite Famicom games of all time: “Akumajō Special: Boku Dracula-kun”, which translates to “Demon Castle Special: I’m Kid Dracula”. There must be some place in my heart reserved for the super deformed bastard offspring of horror franchises, because this game, along with Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti are two of my most cherished Famicom titles.

Finds!

January 14, 2009

I have got a whopper for you today kids. Not only did I find one of the rare-elite and most  sought-after North American SNES games, but this is a game that I have wanted for a really long time. It is also totally awesome that I found it for a hell of a good price. All it cost me was the trade-in of my second (completely unused) XBOX 360 controller, a copy of Condemned 2: Bloodshed and a copy of Gears of War. I present to you… Castlevania: Dracula X:

More after the jump…

Mail Time! (Famicom goodness!)

January 12, 2009

Before I begin, I know that I promised a review last Friday, but Thursday night I got pukey sick and Friday my one year daughter did, so needless to say it wasn’t much of a relaxing weekend. The review still needs some work, but in the mean and in between time, I did get a sweet package on Friday from Carl over at Famicom Shop.

Mighty Final Fight is a truly rad game. It was also released for the NES but I don’t think it’s very common. Mighty Final Fight plays like a super deformed version of the Final Fight arcade / SegaCD version. Think River City Ranson with body splashes and tornado punches. Awesome.

The Zelda game is the cart re-release of the Famicom Disk System orginal “Hyrule Fantasy: Za Hairaru Fantajī Zeruda no Densetsu”, or as we know it: “The Legend of Zelda”. The game is missing the suped up music of the disk version, although it does retain the compatibility with the Famicom’s second controller microphone. I spent a couple hours, between long intervals of feeling totally awful to demonstrate my complete mastery and down-right dangerously excellent Zelda skills:

That’s mine at the top. Damn straight. I forgot how good the first Zelda game was. More around mid-week, kids. Until then…

Mail time! (Twin Famicom!)

January 5, 2009

I finally got a chance to get to the post office to pick up my package this weekend. It had been sitting there since Dec. 31st, which was all the more heart breaking. But it was well worth it when I opened up the securely fastened box to find:
