Finds – the $1.99 deal of my life…

April 30, 2009

hq-pricetag

A chance occurrence today resulted in one of my greatest finds ever, both personally and collection wise. I took a close up shot of the price tag before I peeled it off, because it such an unbelievable price. I had the afternoon off work because my wife and I had a couple appointments with our real estate agent to look at some houses, and we had about 40 minutes of time to kill between showings, so we stopped at the Salvation Army Thrift Store halfway between destinations just to kill time. And low and behold sitting on a shelf in the housewares section was this beauty:

Finds – Extra Large Edition

April 29, 2009

Here is a collective post of all the finds that didn\’t really merit a single post on their own, so I just saved them up so I could do a great big post. All of this stuff has been acquired since mid March. Also of note, I barely paid anything at all for this stuff. I have been on a big trading kick lately and have been refining my collection in the process. I may not have as big a collection as I did 8 months ago, but holy shit- all my games are good. Practically no filler. Without further ado:

Chasing Carts: NES Top 15 CIB (Update #2)

April 25, 2009

This is a chronicle of my quest to own my 15 favorite Nintendo Entertainment System games… Check out the flagship entry here, and after that check out Update #1 here.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh- That was meant to be read as a sigh of relief and not as a scream. I am relieved because I acquired a game today that I have wanted forever. It’s one of my favorite NES games of all time, and therefore I have decided that I must have it complete. I am not a completest-style collector by any means. Sure having the manual and box is great and all, but I just want to play awesome video games. A lot of the time you see some collectors that get too caught up in collecting video game stuff and not nearly enough time playing video game stuff. Like people who collect sealed games. What the fuck is the point??!!?? If you want a challenge, learn to juggle. In the meantime, take the fucking plastic off the game and play it for the love of god. I must admit however, that it does give me a jolt of awesome when I find a game that has sentimental value to me or a game that is one of my favorites complete in the box. On that note, here’s what I got today:

Five Completely Rad Capcom Games

April 22, 2009

Oh, Capcom. You have been so good to us over the years. Most recently with Mega Man 9 and Bionic Commando Rearmed. Unlike some developers (AH-HEM-Rare-COUGH) you never forgot your roots and frequently reward long time fans with remakes, sequels, and assorted rad shwag.

Capcom has made so many great games over the last couple decades that I found it nearly impossible to make a Top 5 list. Instead I just picked five of my favorites from console generations of old. Let it wash over you…

5. The Punisher - Sega Genesis, Released June, 1994

There is no doubt in my mind that Final Fight is one deadly game. But how to make it better? How about this; instead of having your protagonist’s daughter get kidnapped, how about the bad guys just fucking kill her. Hell, throw his wife on the murder train, while your at it. Thus is the motivation of Marvel’s skull encrusted avenger. You play as Frank Castle, AKA The Punisher. In 2 player co-op, your partnered with the cigarette-chomping cyclops-looking sociopath Nick Fury. No need to over think this one. It’s a Final Fight clone. With guns. It’s fucking awesome. (more…)

Chasing Carts: All Zelda CIB (Update #2)

April 20, 2009

This is a reoccurring feature here were I provide updates in my quest to own all of the Zelda games complete-in-box.

Play catch up on my progress by checking out my flagship entry and the first update.

Sorry for the week without updates. My wife, daughter, and I all had this insane cold that put us out of commission for pretty much 4 or 5 days straight. Anyway, I had planned to post this last week, but I have made some more progress in my fight to aquire all the Zelda games CIB. If you have been keeping track of my updates, than you will know that I have quite the uphill battle when it comes to the portable Zelda games. Thankfully I was able to do some damage early last week:

Commodore 64!

April 8, 2009

Unlike most children of the 80’s I never had an Atari 2600. My first memories of the Atari 2600 where not until after I had already received my much loved Nintendo Entertainment System. Whenever we would go over to my aunt and uncle’s giant Lakewood mansion, I would always go off on adventures and would more often then not find my way into their basement. Amongst a ton of neat stuff to get into they had a dusty old 2600 hooked up to an enormous cabinet TV. Even back then (1989?) I remember thinking how, well… old and out dated that 2600 seemed. I mean, I was hot off the heels of my first devastation of The Legend of Zelda, and playing Pitfall and Adventure was just no comparison. Plus having to walk all the way to the console to press pause? C’mon!

I must admit, however, that my first taste of video games was not the NES. When I was a kid my first exposure to video games was the almighty Commodore 64. My cousin Neil had a Commodore 64 and I remember suffering through the hideous load times and literally wasting entire days on Elevator Action and Impossible Mission. For those reasons the Commodore 64 has always had a special place in my heart. (more…)

Finds!

April 7, 2009

With this recent find, I have filled a sizable gap in the body of work that is my game collection. These are two of my favorite games that I have always owned loose, but to find them complete, in the mint/near mint condition they are in, and for the paltry price I paid (i love it when people do spring cleaning and put up classified ads online!), these two beauties are now among the most cherished parts of my collection. See for yourself:

As an added bonus, they both came with guides. Specifically Final Fantasy 3 came with a guide, and Final Fantasy 2 came with volume 30 of Nintendo Power (which features a partial walk through and FF2 on the cover). I did a bit of scouting and it appears that there is no guide for Final Fantasy 2 in existence, so the issue of Nintendo Power will have to suffice.

I am totally shocked by the shape these games are in. These weren’t just stuffed into a bookcase or crammed into a box under the stairs, these games were well taken care of. All I know is that I am totally psyched about these babies and couldn’t be happier. Tons more coming in the upcoming days, so stay tuned.

Q: Where the hell is the temple of doom?

April 6, 2009

A: As you may have noticed, this blog is not called templeofdoom.org anymore. When my domain expired last month I ran into some blatantly obvious “copyright issues” regarding my choice of site and domain names. So I am back (update your bookmarks and blogrolls, bitches) under a new name.

********

Q: Why did I choose VideoGamesAreRad.com?

A: Because it’s an awesome domain name and video games are extremely rad.

********

Q: Why haven’t you updated in like, forever?

A: While I was sorting out this whole domain debachle the site was completely unaccesable because all of my wordpress.com sub directories had the prefix “templeofdoom.org/”, and there for led directly back to a place holder website.

********

Q: Are you going to keep doing this blog?

A: Yes. The only thing that has changed is the domain name and I also changed the layout. All the archived posts are all still intact and I will resume updating as per usual effective tomorrow, and I have aquired a whole bunch of rad jazz in the last 4 or so weeks, so be prepared for the deadly.
