Peel it the Fuck Down: Deconstructing a Game Room

July 31, 2009

In the interest of science, I will be documenting the deconstruction, transportation, and set up of my new game room (aka the Temple of Doom) as my wife, daughter and I move from being renters to home owners.

Where to start? Well how about packing. Now, I may not have the Bubble Bobble 2s, Chase the Chuckwagons and Cauldron 6 in 1s that some other collectors have, but I have been very selective in my collecting and my large collection is more impressive and valuable as a whole, rather than when it’s viewed in parts. There are of course, exceptions (like my mint CIB Snatcher, Suikoden 2 and Dragon Warrior 4).

What this means is rather than put all of my high value games into one or five boxes, I kind of have to think about packing and transporting my collection as if it were one singular living entity.

Not only is the title of this entry a nod to one of my favorite bands of all time, it is also descriptive of my attitude towards packing my game room. I want to get it packed and ready to go sooner rather than later because I have about 8 more rooms that have to be spotlessly cleaned and packed and I don’t want to have to rush packing my life’s work.

So I have already started packing up my collection. I bring home about 5 or 6 boxes everyday from work (it’s times like this I love working in a print shop, where the boxes are plentiful) and I have them filled before I even get on a roll.

Below are three pictures of my temple of doom as it looked about three weeks ago:

Phinds!

cover-close

This is a ‘holy shit find’ I got a few weeks back and just never got around to posting. If you look at the price tag in the photo below you can see that I paid all of $3.95 for this game. Compare that to the Ebay auctions I searched just today where it is going for in the area of $130 US and you could say that I got a pretty good deal.

Finds!

July 17, 2009

I found a couple of gooders today in the wild, and all it cost me was a trade of a couple SNES doubles. Both of these finds are pretty descent scores, in that they are worth a lot more than the money (trades) I paid (traded) for.

ddr-mm

First up we have a game that is listed over at racketboy.com as one of the most valuable GameCube games, Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix. Me being a huge Nintendo fan, I just knew that I had to have this because it is so damn cool. I am not a fan of DDR in any way, shape, or form- hell, I am not even a big fan of exercising, really- but if you slap a mario theme on anything, I am one of those suckers who will buy it. The dance mat itself is in pretty good condition, there is one small tear and it needs a good cleaning, but other than that it’s pretty respectable. The game case is a little rough but the actual insert, manual, and disc are all minty fresh.

Another score I made at the very same used game store was a loose Tengen Tetris- wait… for $10. Super awesome deal. I used to have one of these but I sold it a couple of years ago for like $40, and a quick Ebay search has informed me that it has not lost much of it’s value since then.

All in all a pretty good haul, seen as all I paid for it were loose duplicate copies of Super Mario Kart and Super Mario All Stars.

Summer Carnival ‘92 Recca

recca-cart

Check out what I just got in the mail… my very own copy of Summer Carnival ‘92 Recca. Yes, I am aware that it is a pirate and not the super-rare official version, but even pirate copies of Recca ain’t easy to track down. Just ask me, I have literally been looking for a copy for years. I scooped this up straight from Argentina by way of the Famicom World forums, and as a bonus the buyer included a plastic cart case. It seems to be made for Master System games, but I haven’t check yet because much of my video games stuff is packed. All I know is that it holds my Recca just fine. This is the only pint-sized hard shell case I have, and it’s pretty cool. I will have keep my eyes open from now on.

And just what the heel is this Summer Carnival ‘92 Recca that I have been bathering on about? Sit back, clench your teeth, watch Lance’s (from Retrowaretv.com)  review below, and hold the fuck on because it is wicked!

That’s a Famicom game! The sprite count and speed are unbelievable. And that’s not sped up emulation, either. This game really does play like that; and a hell of a lot better than that video would make it seem.

My wife and I are set to take possession of of new house on August 27th. Over the past couple days I have been going through my collection and weeding out extras, doubles, and stuff I am no longer interested in. Today I took a grocery bag full of TG-16 stuff down to Re-Play Games and made a straight trade for this:

Oh baby. With this must covetted aquisition I am only one CIB game away from a complete Dragon Warrior set (1-4 and 7) and only 5 away from a complete Dragon Warrior / Quest set. I am still missing the boxes for the first 4 Famicom games, and I am missing a CIB Dragon Warrior 2 for the NES. Re-Play has a minty fresh Dragon Warrior 2 CIB sitting in their display case, and I imagine by the end of the month I will have dug out a 100 dollars more worth of stuff that I can part with. The Famicom games can be had for practically nothing CIB ($15-25 a piece, probably less if I avoid Ebay).
